Gilbertson Conservation Education Area is a 345 acre park located along the banks of the Turkey River. The late Millard Gilbertson of Elgin donated the original 320 acres to the Fayette County Conservation Board in 1986. The park features a canoe access, paved trail with handicap access, playground, shelter house, modern campground with dump station, bathhouse, and electric hook-up. Over five miles of trails are open to hikers, horseback riders, non-motorized bikes and cross-country skiing. Fishing is available in the pond and the river. Hunting is allowed in specific parts of the park.

Tourists can visit the nature center which houses live animals, mounted animals, study skins, restrooms and more.

The petting zoo is home to a variety of animals including calves, pigs, goats, and more.
